Quantitative Reasoning – Map of Indian province Kerala!

2014_QNR 10. The map of the Indian province of Kerala shows how its area can be approximated using a simple straight-side shape. The shape has two parallel sides 561 and 216 km long. The other sides are 180 and 211 km long. Its parallel sides are 100 km apart.

Which one of the following sets of calculations will give the best approximation of the area of Kerala in square kilometers?

(1) (180 + 211 + 561 + 216)*100
(2) 180*211 + 561*216
(3) 100 *(561+216/2)
(4) (100/2) * (216 + 561)

Ans:  The province is a  trapezium (quadrilateral with one pair of parallel lines); it can be drawn as below:

Area of the trapezium = (1/2) * (sum of the parallel sides) * distance between the parallel sides = (1/2)*(216+ 561)*100. Option (4).
